Founded in 1945, the California Council on the Education of Teachers (now the California Council on Teacher Education as of July 2001) is a non-profit organization devoted to stimulating the improvement of the pre-service and in-service education of teachers and administrators. The Council attends to this general goal with the support of a community of teacher educators, drawn from diverse constituencies, who seek to be informed, reflective, and active regarding significant research, sound practice, and current public educational issues.

Spring 2008 Issue of CCNews
The Spring 2008 issue of CCNews, the quarterly newsletter of the California Council on Teacher Education, has just been published and is available for your reading pleasure by clicking here. This issue of the newsletter provides final information on the Spring 2008 CCTE Conference around the theme “Got Accreditation?” which will be held in San Jose March 6-8. If you have not yet registered, you are encouraged to do so immediately. A registration form is on page 4 of the newsletter. The newsletter also contains information on many other CCTE activities.

Spring 2008 CCTE Conference on Accreditation
The theme for the Spring 2008 Conference, held March 6-8 at the Sainte Claire Hotel in San Jose, was "Got Accreditation?" A list of assumptions, concerns, issues, and questions about accreditation was developed at the Conferencce, and can be accessed with a click.

Fall 2007 CCTE Conference on Assessment
The Fall 2007 CCTE Conference on the theme “Assessment in the Service of Learning” will be held October 18-20 at the Kona Kai Resort in San Diego. The materials posted on our web site include the Fall Conference announcement, tentative program, registration form, and calls for research proposals and awards nominations.

CCTE Submits Commentary on NCLB to Superintendent O’Connell
The California Council on Teacher Education has responded to State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell’s invitation for commentary related to the reauthorization of the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Based upon information gathered from CCTE members and delegates at the Second Policy Session at the Fall 2006 Conference, the CCTE Policy Committee drafted and the CCTE Board of Directors unanimously approved a five-page communication to O’Connell. The communication, which is available on the website by clicking here, includes the Joint Organizational Statement on NCLB that CCTE endorsed in 2005, the commentary from the Fall Conference, and a summary statement expressing the view that NCLB should not be reauthorized unless several major concerns are addressed first.

Membership in the California Council on Teacher Education can be either institutional or individual. Colleges and universities with credential programs, professional organizations with interests in the preparation of teachers, school districts and public agencies in the field of education, and individuals involved in or concerned about the field are encouraged to join. Membership entitles one to participation in semi-annual spring and fall conferences, subscription to Teacher Education Quarterly and Issues in Teacher Education, newsletters on timely issues, an informal network for sharing sound practices in teacher education, and involvement in annual awards and recognitions in the field.
