Featuring Gary Orfield

The keynote speaker at the Conference on Friday will be Gary Orfield, professor with the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University and co-director of the Harvard Civil Rights Project. The Conference will also feature other invited presentations, including a panel with former California Secretary of Education Gary Hart, Diane Doe of the California Federation of Teachers, and Andrea Whittaker of San Jose State University, as well as policy discussions, research and best practice sessions, special interest group meetings, a Conference banquet and luncheon, and other special sessions. The final sessions on Saturday morning will focus on policy issues, including participation by State Senator Dede Alpert.

Conference Theme: “Legislative Actions: Intended and Unintended Consequences for All”

Through invited speakers, panels, research and best practice sessions, policy sessions, special interest groups, and informal conversations the participants in the Fall 2004 Conference of the California Council on Teacher Education will explore the processes by which public policy related to teacher education evolves and how such policies have both intended and unintended consequences for all segments of the public, and most especially for students, teachers, and teacher educators.

Who Should Attend?

Teacher educators, including subject matter faculty, at colleges and universities (two-year, four-year, and graduate), BTSA directors and staff and other K-12-based teacher educators, supervisors of student teachers, classroom teachers, school district and county office staff development personnel, students in credential programs, state education leaders, members of professional associations, staff at research centers — everyone interested in and involved in teacher education, induction, and professional development across California. Note the special registration rate for first-time attendees.

Hotel Accommodations

You must make your own hotel reservations for the Conference. Call the Shelter Pointe Hotel and Marina at 800/566-2524 and tell them you are attending the CCTE Fall Conference. The Conference rate is $129 (single or double) and the reservation deadline for our block of rooms is September 7, although some rooms may still be available after that date.
